Staff Profile: Dawn, Shelter Advocate

Dawn joined the Bethany House team as a Shelter Advocate earlier this year after being told about the open position by a neighbor, who also happens to work at Bethany House.

She has jumped into the mission with both feet, working incredibly hard to meet the needs of the families we serve and prepare spaces for new survivors moving in.

The creativity and focus Dawn brings to each task demonstrate her commitment, not only to the survivors we serve, but also to her fellow teammates.

What excites you about the mission?

I’m driven to help people, especially those who feel alone in the world and don’t know where to turn or who to ask for help. It’s rewarding to see how people grow and flourish when they feel safe and supported.

How does your background impact your work at Bethany House?

In working with marginalized and under-served people, I’ve learned that we all want the same things in life: a safe, comfortable home; enough income to pay the bills; and to see our children live a better life than we did. No matter where we come from or what our circumstances have been, there’s much more that unites us than divides us.

What is a 2024 goal you are most excited to work on?

I like to take things one day at a time and make each effort count. That includes prioritizing balance in my work and home life.

What is the biggest challenge those we serve are facing in 2024?

While awareness of domestic violence and the importance of survivor-centered care has grown, funding for these programs has not kept pace with demand. This leaves many survivors without adequate access to comprehensive, trauma-informed support resources, legal aid, affordable housing and childcare services all of which are crucial to healing and rebuilding after abuse.
