Board Profile: Tina, Board of Trustees

Tina began her service with Bethany House as a volunteer, providing afterschool children’s activities such as arts and crafts projects.

Impressed by the staff’s “dedication, respect and genuine concern for the residents,” she quickly decided to take her service further by joining the board.

As an emergency healthcare provider, Tina has personally cared for people who have experienced domestic abuse and has a deep understanding of the obstacles that survivors face.

Her expertise has been invaluable to helping those in our care to not only heal physically, but also develop the mental and emotional strength to surmount the challenges of building a life free from violence.

What excites you about the mission?

Bethany House not only provides immediate safety and shelter to survivors, but also helps them regain their psychological, emotional and financial independence. The organization takes a multi-faceted approach from day one to achieve and ensure the best future for the residents of Bethany House.

How does your background impact your work at Bethany House?

As a healthcare provider in an emergency department, I’ve witnessed first-hand the cycle of abuse, as well as the challenges and obstacles that survivors encounter when deciding to leave a violent environment. Being on the board gives me hope that other organizations have a similarly dedicated staff and well-defined, holistic process that can help the survivors in their care to break the cycle of domestic violence.

What is a 2024 goal you are most excited to work on?

As a board member, I feel the responsibility and obligation to inform and educate the community about the resources that are available to survivors of domestic violence at Bethany House. I would also like to continue to find new ways to gain support from the public and private sectors so that Bethany House has the financial resources to expand its services further.

What is the biggest challenge those we serve are facing in 2024?

For any survivor of domestic violence, finding the initial courage to get distance from an abuser is a challenge. Even with unflinching resolve, the biggest challenge is accessing the support and resources that make leaving not only possible but also safe. Without those crucial elements, the likelihood of a survivor returning to an unsafe environment increases exponentially. That pattern underscores the importance of the shelter, services and support that organizations like Bethany House provide.
