At Bethany House, we have chosen for 40 years to put our resources toward deep, comprehensive help for individuals and families in desperate situations. This is a thoughtful decision. While emergency care for domestic violence is always valued and needed, long-term shelter and support can make changes that impact generations. Thank you for supporting us in this mission. We are also grateful to the Greater Toledo Community Foundation and the Association of Fundraising Professionals – Northwest Ohio Chapter. These groups banded together for this year’s annual National Philanthropy Day. At the November 12 event, Bethany House was recognized as the Nonprofit of the Year (in the large category). The honor came with an unrestricted grant of $6,500. This is the first year that the two groups combined their awards. They united to better recognize the power of giving, deepen community engagement, and elevate the legacy of philanthropy. Thank you for trusting us.
These are challenging times for nonprofit organizations, particularly those serving primarily women and children. Budgets are tight and governmental support is uncertain. We urgently need to at least maintain the services that we provide. Research shows that domestic violence homicides rise by 26% in regions where support services are reduced. We know that for every $1 cut from women’s advocacy programs, communities incur $7.25 in additional costs. These costs include emergency response, healthcare, lost productivity, and the cost of public assistance. We want to improve services to victims of domestic violence.
