The True Cost of Intimate Partner Violence—and the Power of Volunteers

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) impacts far more than the individuals directly involved; it affects families, communities, and entire systems of care. Survivors may lose income, housing, and, tragically, even their lives.

In 2024, the cost of IPV in Lucas County alone was estimated at $42 million, with the largest share going to physical health care, over $9 million in emergency and long-term rehabilitation. Other significant expenses included lost work productivity ($8.2 million) and the economic impact of loss of life ($8.6 million).

When survivors begin rebuilding their lives, the services they need such as housing, childcare, health care, and legal support, often come at a high cost. At Bethany House, we provide long-term transitional housing in private apartments, sometimes for a year or more, at no cost to survivors. This vital work is possible thanks in large part to our volunteers.

Whether it’s donating a gas gift card, helping create a warm and welcoming facility, or working behind the scenes, our volunteers make it possible for every dollar to go further. Their time, skills, and compassion offer more than assistance, they bring hope. In 2024, 193 dedicated volunteers contributed 693 hours of service to Bethany House.

Bethany House could not offer the level of care we do without these incredible individuals. Across northwest Ohio, volunteers are changing lives every day. Together, we can build a stronger, more compassionate community for everyone.
